Overview of
Information Systems: Why It Matters

Information Systems: Why It Matters focuses on issues that matter to a new generation of business students, namely the GenZ and younger. The GenZs are digital natives and are acutely aware of the impact of information technology (IT) on their daily life. As digital natives, they are intimately engaged with their mobile devices, apps, and their platforms. However, they need to have a better appreciation of the data that their engagement produces. After all, it is this data that app creators, platform providers, and other vendors value the most. Therefore, it becomes important for the consumer (the student) to know the impact of the technology and the value of the data stream that their technology use creates.
This book is written and built with the GenZ students in mind. It gives the reader a clear view of what, where, how, when, and why the business of IT, information systems (IS), and analytics (BA) play a significant role in organizations. While IT and IS have changed from the early 1960s, the focus always has been on bringing value to the organization and its stakeholders. This book illustrates through its twelve chapters how that value is created and delivered. By focusing on this value proposition, the book enables students to see the benefits of IS and BA, generates interest in the IS and BA, and most importantly engages the student..
