Overview of
Connecting Through Communication

Discovery

Welcome to Introduction to Speech Communication; this particular course is my favorite to teach because the content extends far beyond merely delivering and evaluating speeches! The basic premise of this text is that communication is a skill which can be substantially improved upon by anyone with motivation and persistence. Finally, this text is designed to provide a practical, relevant, and interactive experience which will help equip you for your present college and future personal/professional endeavors.

As inherently social creatures, most human beings find their greatest source of happiness and satisfaction in relationships with other people. Communication is the process by which people create, transmit, and interpret messages. Much of what is known about communication and personal well-being concerns the role of interpersonal communication in quality of life. However, other communication contexts such as small group communication, organizational communication, and even public speaking can also be associated with personal and professional aptitude.

This text is designed to teach students communication theories applied to speech, practical communicative experiences ranging from interpersonal communication and small group process to preparation and delivery of platform speeches.  Students will learn more about themselves and improve skills in communicating with others.

About the Author
C Paige Carr Lovelace

C. Paige Lovelace earned her Master of Arts in Communication from The University of Texas at Tyler and served as a formalized Graduate Teaching Assistant during this time.  She was hired as an adjunct instructor in the Fall of 2011 at the TCC Northeast campus and subsequently as a full-time faculty member in Fall of 2016 on South campus. She now serves as both an Instructor of Speech Communication as well as the Department Chair for the Language Arts Department on the TCC South Campus.

In addition to over a decade of classroom instructional experience, she was honored to serve the past year on course release as the Lead Faculty Facilitator for the Active Learning Academy from 2019 – 2020. Under the direction of the Integrated Instructional Learning Environments Principle leadership, she was given the opportunity to help research, develop, propose, and implement professional development programs and assessment practices for TCC on a district-wide scale. Working in this role led me to not only more fully appreciate and understand our institutional initiatives, but also to participate in processes and procedures related to both faculty and student success.

C. Paige Lovelace has a strong passion for teaching and learning, professional development, and innovative pedagogical practices.  Both my personal and professional core beliefs are grounded in transparency, connection, collaboration, and effective communication.  Additionally, she am a mother of three; an avid sports fan; and frequently volunteers her time to serve our community through facilitating emotional intelligence training for a local non-profit organization.
