Overview of
Introduction to Corporate Finance

Discovery

The Corporate Finance is intended for Junior-level and above undergraduate students who have completed courses on college algebra, principles of accounting, and principles of microeconomics. The text serves as both a standalone course for non-finance majors and as a foundation for finance majors as they prepare for more advanced courses. This textbook was designed as an eText that combines interactive examples and video tutorials with the lessons and assignments. All resources are built into the chapters for intuitive access while students learn the content and work practice problems.

Other popular finance texts tend to be structured in a way that encourages students to skip reading the content, jump right into the practice problems, and try to memorize solutions to each problem. This text is structured so that the example problems and example videos are embedded in the content. The example video solutions incorporate discussion of the concepts so that even students who skip reading the text are exposed to the underlying concepts while learning how to solve the practice problems. The text introduces a novel three-step solution process that can be applied to any time value of money problem. This structure and approach helps students avoid the pitfall of trying to memorize the solution steps to each problem without understanding the underlying concepts. In addition, the practice problems use a “crawl, walk, run” approach to developing mastery. The initial practice problems mimic example problems exactly and students can follow the example solutions’ application of the three-step method. As students develop mastery, the problems increase in complexity, go deeper into the concepts, and build student’s confidence in solving finance problems they have not yet encountered. The practice problems can be worked repeatedly and include detailed feedback that students can use to continue developing mastery.
