Overview of
Practical Orthopedics: A Visual Guide to the Musculoskeletal History and Physical Examination

This electronic book was written with the intention to help instruct the reader on how to perform a focused Orthopaedic history and physical examination. As in many disciplines, the Orthopaedic examination incorporates taking a detailed history followed by preforming specific maneuvers which hopefully concludes in a proper diagnosis.
On evaluating a new musculoskeletal complaint, the practitioner must act as a detective searching for clues to aid in a diagnosis. These clues can be gathered through a thorough history, performing an appropriate physical examination and additional diagnostic testing as needed.
Throughout the evolution of the specialty, many specific Orthopaedic physical examination maneuvers have been described that can help aid in finding a correct diagnosis. Traditionally these maneuvers have been taught either in person or from descriptively written texts. With advances in technology we have the opportunity to add video clips along with approved video internet links to the learning process. This will allow the reader to repeat a video of an Orthopaedic maneuver until they feel confident with the technique. Additionally, since this an electronic book, it can be readily accessed whenever needed via hand held digital devices.
The book is composed of chapters which cover each joint or region separately. In each chapter the reader will find a concise but pertinent review of the anatomy. This is then followed by descriptions of specific orthopaedic conditions. We have made the effort to include the most commonly encountered Orthopaedic pathology. The descriptions of each condition will include the most common complaints that patients typically present with as well as important questions to ask. Written and video descriptions of procedures and physical exam maneuvers are included when needed and provide resource portability.
The reader will also encounter helpful clinical tips throughout the text which are referred to as Ortho Pearls. The Orthopaedic pearls will be designated with a skeleton icon.
